TITLE SEQUENCE

The title sequence was the final part I made for the short film. I wasnt originally going to make this but I had the extra time and thought that this would've improved the short film overall giving it a more satisfying viewing. For the title sequence what I did was look up on youtube sound effects of someone placing a VHS tape in a recorder then followed up by the visuals of a VHS tape starting up. I then edited these 2 things together bringing it a more immersive experience. After this I then accompanied the visuals with quick cuts of the future scenes almost as if the tape is being put in fast forward as it speeds up through the corrupted tape quickly showing the clips. What I did for this was just get a second from each scene then place them together with visual effects to them making them look more corrupted for example I added a red filter to one of the scenes that zoomed in to my face and I also added a haunting scream to the shot of my face in red, making the audience use their imagination to what that means. After this section I then edited the end of this section by adding the title card which is very simple, just a text taking up the middle of the screen displaying the title of the short film, the text then disappears then visually glitches as a transition to the first scene. During this title card sequence is a sound effect of a speed up noise of a VHS tape rewinding. I want this rewinding effect so that it is consistent with the fast forward effect I intended in the part before so then the tape is being rewindinded back to the start of the tape to let it play out which is the short film that follows. I believe this is a great addition to the short film as it adds alot more immersion and also raises more rhetorical questions such as who is watching the tape? And how did they get this tape? What happens to the characters in the video? My intention are to raise questions such as these as I want to purposely miss out gaps for the audience to fill in for themselves as sometimes the audiences imagination can come up with an ending far more interesting than anything I can come up with using the resources I have so I have used that aspect to my advantage, plus unexplained endings are a popular trend when it comes to these type of movies. Overall I am glad I spent the time creating this.

SCENE 1

Scene 1 was most likely the most challenging to edit because this was the first scene I edited so at this point I did not know what direction to take this in when it comes to the editing. I went with the approach of adding effects that make the VHS tape more believable adding more immersion for the audience. I first wanted to add a filter to the footage that would have the lines you would see when watching an old video tape. I searched for this on YouTube and found a greenscreen with the effect I wanted to use. I chroma keyed the filter onto the footage and it made the video look so much better and way more realistic. I wanted to add more so I searched on youtube for a glitch effect for the VHS tape. I eventually found a video that i liked and added those for the transitions between scenes and just splicing it in the scenes themselves to add more immersion to them. Making the video look more corrupted which fits the main killer, with him being corrupted. I then adopted this formula for the rest of the scenes. I have now found my approach. Other than that there were no problems.

SCENE 2

Scene 2 was the quickest and easiest to edit as the clip itself went really well. First what I did was cut out the parts I didnt want (mainly the parts where I direct) after i had the clip i wanted i then added a filter over the video of the VHS effect using a greenscreen i got from YouTube. After that I added the glitche effect for the transitions between this scene and scene 1. The audio from the scene was perfect as I mentioned before with the background noise fitting perfectly with the actions within the scene. That is all to mention as it was very easy to edit this scene as it worked in my favour. No problems occurred when editing this.

SCENE 3

Scene 3 was when I encountered my first problem. I had 2 takes of this scene and both takes had a problem. In take 1 everything went well until halfway someones phone went off. In take 2 I managed to get through the whole scene really well except I forgot one of the lines so theres missing dialogue in this take. To solve this what I did was use the first half of take 1 that went well then before the phone went off I added a visual effect that made the whole screen glitch accompanied by white noise then during that visual glitch I was splice in take 2 from after the missing dialogue. So I managed to get the whole dialogue in the scene without anyones phones going off and managed to make it look natural by using the theme of the short film to my advantage of using the glitch effect. Along with that I also used the green screen VHS tape visuals to add more immersion just like the other scenes just to add more immersion and consistency to the short film. This scene also involves a part where I murder the victim with gas. For the visuals what I did was look in YouTube for greenscreen gas and looked for the best one I thought I could use for my scene. I found the video i wanted to use and downloaded it and put it in the scene. I placed the source from the gas coming from off screen where I threw the deodorant can but there was a problem as there was a tiny black bar from the bottom which would ruin the immersion of the visual gas so what I did was slightly crop the clip so that it fixed that problem. Then the final problem when editing this scene was from the visual gas obviously looking added in during the part when I take my hand in front of the camera as you can see the gas on my hand looking really fake. To fix this what I did was add the same visual glitch for the whole screen accompanied by the white noise sound effect between the part when I walk away and where I put my hand in front of the camera. What i then did was place the gas effect below the visual glitch then removed it while the visual glitch is playing so when it cuts back to the scene the gas is gone. I am hoping with this effect the viewer will assume that some time has passed and that the gas cleared up. It was the best thing I could come up with without making the audience question the visual effects too much. I hope this intention is visible in the short film. That's all for scene 3. This scene took the most workarounds when it comes to the visuals and the mistakes made in the scenes themselves. Overall I believe I did a great job handling these issues.

SCENE 4

Scene 4 is very similar to scene 1 both in terms of the actual footage itself and the editing. I didnt run into a trouble when editing this scene and there weren't anything special I needed to do. What I did was cut out the parts I did not need (start and finish) and add the VHS tape filter over the footage so that it adds to the immersion as well as adding VHS glitches in a few of the parts that take up the whole screen just to add more corruption to the tape. I chroma keyed the green screen visuals I found from youtube and I added the visual glitches. That is all I have to say about scene 4 as otherwise I'll just be repeating myself from scene 1. As I've edited scene 1 I knew exactly how to edit this so it didn't even take long to fully edit this scene.

SCENE 5

For scene 5 I started with adding the VHS tape visuals effects by chroma keying it in. I've used this for all 6 scenes. I also added the whole screen glitch visual effect when transition this clip. Again this scene is very similar to scene 3 except there weren't any mistakes as I did everything perfect in 1 take and there arent any gas needed to include or any other special effects I needed to use so I had a very simple time when editing this scene. I just had to follow the formula I crafted during scene 1. I followed the formula and this scene turned out exactly how I imagined so it turned out great and as good as this is this does mean I dont have much to say which is u fortunate but that was the reality, this project isn't hard to edit and I knew that back during the proposal stage which is why I left the editing to a week before the due date so I had more time to film the scenes and for pre-production.

SCENE 6

The final scene of the short film. First of all I had to pick out the clips I wanted to use which was a bit of an inconvenience because I had 6 takes and none of them were fully perfect so I decided to use the technique I learned back during my time editing Scene 3. I ended up picking 2 of the 6 takes and what I did was use the first half of the first take I chose and then use the glitch effect that changes the whole screen then proceed to sneakly cut to my second take I chose for the scene. It will be unnoticeable except for the camera angle changes slightly but hopefully that shouldn't be noticeable when you take into account how corrupted the screen will be. The screen will include the greens screen VHS visual effects I've been using for every other scene in this short film as well a using the VHS glitch which I have explained my usage for. After this i followed the formula i have created and it turned out great but there was something missing. At the end of the previous scene the main character hits the camera and for immersion I wanted to show the consequence of that. I showed that by getting a PNG image of a cracked screen from google and layering it over the footage but placed it under the glitch effect but above the green screen visuals. This added more immersion to the screen and makes the footage more corrupt and hopefully this addition makes the cut I did more unnoticeable. As for the final shot of this scene I wanted the audience to know that the shot isn't from the camera so I took away all of the effects, this includes, the cracked screen PNG, The greenscreen VHS visuals and the VHS glitch. Just a clean screen which looks odd when compared to every other shot in the film. It stands out. This is my intention. The shot is panning out from the main characters face and during the end of the shit before and this shot a song plays (this will be my credits song) and I chose this song to be "Monster - Daydream in Blue" I chose this song because the lyrics fit that shot as well as the whole film. "Fell asleep amid the flowers for a couple of hours on a beautiful day" this matches the visuals perfectly which the main character unconscious/dead on the floor sounded by nature. I also used this song because the start sounds like a respirator which plays after the main character gets knocked to the ground so that matches as it sounds like he is making that noise. During the song the lyrics get dark by mentioning violence and during that part of the song it sounds corrupted just like the whole film itself. Lastly I think the song sounds good and the beat of it matches the film as it's not what the viewer would expect but it's not an out of place song. It's not there just for the sake of being there. The song plays through the credits and during the final to cuts I made it cut to the beat of the song and while the credits play I tried my best to make the words appear on beat to the song. At the end of credits I faded out the song and it doesnt sound out of place at all. It all fits. I'm very satisfied with how I managed to use the song as well as everything else about this scene. I believe this is a good send off to the film.
