COLLEGE WORK
UNIT 11
Reflection
So overall what went well? I managed to make three drafts for my professional showreel and I'm really pleased with my final showreel because it includes the entire production process of my psychological thriller short film and shows how I handled directing those scenes. As for the advert I initially was going to do one advert where I play the salesman and I get an actor to play the customer but then I changed my mind and decided to swap the actor for the customer to play the salesman instead and get someone else to play the customer and continue the story from my Unit 9 live show using the same characters. I also opted to create multiple adverts instead of just one using the same 2 actors but also using the Owen Ginnett character to also make obscure random adverts. Editing them was fun and filming them was even more fun. As for the script I followed a pattern every time of having salesman shill a product trying to make the product sound like a dream come true but because of the nature of the characters shilling the product it comes across as untrustworthy to purchase. For my Research paper I decided to look into an example of symmetrical storytelling including the story of Vaas. This story is something I am very passionate about and I loved diving into the lore of this character and all of the philosophical elements of the character. I talked about why Vaas is one of the most interesting fictional characters of all time. For my personal statement and CV I didn't have much trouble creating those as I heavily relied on templates to help me and they really did help. The templates made this part of the unit way easier than they would've been and the tutors helped alot with creating these too. As for struggles I didnt struggle at all this unit, I would've struggled without the templates but other than that I'd say I struggled with the research paper because there was so much to cover and I didn't know how to structure it but after planning it all it went smoothly from there. The biggest lesson I learnt from this unit really was on how to make personal statements as well as making a professional showreel. I now understand the process that goes into both and this was be a skill that will help me for my future career. I am very excited to start on the next unit but also quite upset as this next unit will be the last unit before the FMP which is scary as it shows how close to the end of the course we are but I will enjoy what's left of the next two units.
Profesional Reel
FINAL PRODUCT
I chose draft 3 to be my final professional showreel because I strongly believe it’s the best out of the 3 because it’s the only one that really shows the creation process of the production and the instrumental in this showreel I enjoy the most, it’s fitting as the song was created by a Bo Burnham to showcase himself setting up his camera and lighting along with practicing song writing and this fits what I’m doing as I’m using it to show the creation process of my FMP. This showreel mainly focuses on my ability to become a director as this shows me directing other people on what to do during the production process and it shows location scouting and even my ability to act. One negative about this showreel is that it only focuses on one project instead of it being a compilation of all of my projects. I’m sure if I showed more projects it would look more impressive. Overall I am very pleased with how the showreel went.
DRAFTS
Draft #1
For this first showreel draft I chose to put the full focus on my most recent project, the live show. The visuals show the behind the scenes of the production process and the music is chamber of reflection by Mac DeMarco.
Draft #2
In this showreel test i used footage from my FMP and made a short edit using a shot from each scene in chronological order from start to end using a section of the song gyöngyhajú lány by Omega
Draft #3
This showreel test is my favourite draft out of the 3 I've made and this showreel shows the production process of my extended FMP and the song I use is called Bo's theme from Inside by Bo Burnham

Customer Response
I've used this actor before for my unit 9 live show and just like then he delivers a performance thats fitting for the theme for this advert. This got scrapped in favour for the FMP.
This actor took over the role of customer response in which the original actor became the new salesman. In this video he does a good job at what he was tasked to do.

Website Review

I find this comedic because it the reviewer sent a picture of himself but the picture is taken sideways plus it's on Amazon which is owned by Jeff Bezos who has a reputation of being similar to stereotypical villains such as Lex Luthor.
Rugen Island Pesticide Logo

I got a graphic designer to make this logo for the fictional company Rugen Island Pesticide that is the company advertising the spider spray.

Gloves advert

This image is going to be used at the end of the winter gloves advert. I got someone who is an experienced graphic designer to make this and it's just what I need, as in it's meant to look over the top in a bad way. This company must be bad at advertising if they're hiring Owen to be the salesman.
PRE-PRODUCTION
I have had a change of plan when it comes to the advert, I’m still keeping my original idea of the spider spray and the corrupt salesman but instead of creating new cameras I have used the character from the Owen Ginnett show called Jonas Schmitt whose purpose was to be an untrustworthy advert within the show. I have brought back the same character (same actor) and now he is taking the role of the salesman, the script remains mostly the same with a few tweaks to make more sense within the context of the character. The reason behind this decision is that I have already planned to continue this story for my FMP and this advert is a great opportunity to keep on track and also further develop the story. This isn’t the only advert I am going to do, originally this was the only advert but I have decided to do at least 3 more adverts (likely being more) using the same character of Jonas Schmitt to advertise another untrustworthy product and the other 2 adverts will include Owen Ginnett and it will show what he has been doing in the meantime (adverts for money because he was kicked off the show and him creating these adverts is his desperate attempt at continuing his fame and getting money) these 2 adverts will continue the comedy feel of the advert being unprofessional and including sections that aren’t meant to be in the advert in the first place. One advert being about Owen advertising a park and the other advert being about Owen advertising winter gloves which he does by attempting to trick the viewer into thinking it’s snowing heavily until the cameraman accidently shows the surroundings which shows barely any snow as well as it being the same location as the park advert implying that Owen is trying to make as many adverts as he can while putting minimal effort required. The Old Lane Park advert was entirely improvised.

RESEARCH
This Spider spray contains vinegar which according to thepestmanagment.com “Vinegar is acidic and will burn the spider on contact, most spiders will not instantly die on contact but they usually die a few minutes after contact.” – Dinesh Kumar. According to the source anything acidic (like vinegar) will harm spiders so to create this product I will include vinegar along with another acidic item, that being an acidic fruit, I will pair up vinegar with Lemon which is an extremely acidic fruit. According to thehappyhousecleaning.co.uk “Spiders hate citrus fruits! You can easily prepare green repellent by squeezing half a lemon and mixing it with water. Pour this liquid in spray bottle and spray around the house. Spiders usually nest in wall crack, corners of the walls, and the hidden, dark places – behind cabinets and wardrobes, heavy pieces of furniture, corners of walls and ceilings, cracks in wooden flooring.” – Blog post from October 9th 2016. This statement supports my claim.
An important method to when it comes to selling products to not sell but to help the customer buy. They want to make an informed and autonomous decision. They want to come to the conclusion themselves, in short, people want to buy. But they dont want to be sold to. An example of this being done in the real world, Jeff Bezos explained his sales philosophy: "Amazon is not in the business of selling books, we are in the business of helping people buy books.” This method is more psychological than anything as it's a way to prevent the customer from feeling patronised.
crazyegg.com, 3 things that the "used car salesman" can teach us about online marketing, post from April 1, 2016.
The main rule is that salesman should always dress smarter than the customer. Weither the salesman is dressed in casual or formal they should dress neat. This ensures trust and respect from the salesman to the customer which makes the customer more likely to trust the product being promoted. careertrend.com, sales attire advice for men, 26 September, 2017, Jessica Shear.
TREATMENT
Salesman attempts to persuade the viewer into buying a useless product
The advert will have a salesman who will try his absolute best to use persuasive language to sell a useless overpriced item that no sane person would ever use. From the audience perspective it will be obvious that it’s a scam just to get money for low effort product. I want this to make the audience think twice about a product when they next see any sort of advertisement, such as, do they really need it? Can they find it elsewhere for much cheaper, is it from a reliable company? Is it even from a company?
The salesman is the main character of the advert and he only has one goal in mind, sell the product. Whether he himself believes in this product or not is not displayed to the viewer just like how it is in real adverts.
I will make the Salesman advertise a spider spray containing vinegar and lemon which is makes this product not worth buying because this can easily be made at home for much cheaper and it's also advertised that it will not harm the spider but that is not true, the product harming the spider is deliberately obviously a lie to make the audience catch on and make them wonder what other lies are there that's not so obvious to the viewer, especially for other products (real life products). The salesman lies about the product to make it feel more useful than it actually is, therefore giving the viewer more of a justification on purchasing the product. Another question I want the audience to think is if they were in the same position as the salesman would they too blatantly lie to an audience of people for cash or would they reject the money to keep their integrity intact.
PITCH
For my advert I will have a charismatic guy using persuasive language to try and sell a spider spray (the spray contains vinegar and Lemon (And is overpriced) the advert will mainly be comedy based because it will have someone try and sell the audience an overpriced item that anyone can make at home for much cheaper. An example of a comedic line I can use is the charismatic guy saying the spray will put the spider to sleep without any harm done but in reality vinegar kills spiders on impact. It will be 30 seconds long. (Unless changed in future)
INSPIRATION
My immediate thought process went towards the fictional advert from “Better Call Saul” Season 3 Episode 6. The advert contains a charismatic guy making a TV commercial about making TV and I wish to create something similar to this advert shown in Better Call Saul. I can take inspiration by having a charismatic guy with over the top transitions such as the star transition. I can also include flashy text. Biggest point would be to use persuasive language similar to the character in the video uses “Look at you, you’re a triple threat. Great services, great products and most of all that face, you belong on TV”
I've also been inspired by a scene from Bo Burnhams Inside in which the focused character is unintentionally exposing their facade by putting on a fake persona followed up with a long uncomfortable pause at the end.
Research Paper
SYMMETRICAL STORYTELLING
What can I say about this character that hasn't been said before? I feel even if you have not played far cry 3 you have more than likely heard of Vaas, and there's a reason for that. Vaas is such a compelling well written character and Michael Mandos' portrayal of Vaas is a very memorable performance. The character was never meant to exist in the first place but during auditioning when michael mando auditioned to be Lupo but instead the developers were so inspired by his audition that they scrapped Luco and created Vaas and made him look identical to the actor and they even used Mo Cap for the character having Michael Mando be in the suit so as a result Vaas feels like a real person who then became the poster boy for far cry 3 and I genuinely believe that the character Vaas is the sole reason why Far Cry has the massive following it has today. They even brought back his character for a standalone DLC for far cry 6 which shows more about his backstory and should help me answer the big question; Why is Vaas such a fan favourite?
Well to first understand Vaas (the antagonist) we will have to understand Jason Brody (the protagonist of the story) Jason and his group of friends end up on the island and Jason has to save all of them otherwise they'll become victims to human trafficking. Jason encounters many people on the island, some helpful, some not so helpful, but the most memorable character you come across is Vaas. From your very first encounter with him you can clearly see that he isn't mentally stable through his monologue with Jason clearly degrading Jason and mocking him for thinking he was something he isn't. Jason's journey throughout Far Cry is a very transformative experience as from the beginning he is forced to watch Vaas kill his older brother along with killing for the first time which is was clearly self defense and you can clearly see Jason struggling the concept of him taking away someone's life but as the game progress and the longer Jason stays on this island, the more he becomes feral in his actions as he eventually he will slaughter multiple pirates and enjoy the adrenaline he gets from it. You cant really blame Jason for his earlier actions as they were necessary for him to save his friends but him doing so has changed him to think that he is powerful and belongs on the island because of how powerful he feels, and his power and motivation mainly comes from Citra (who is Vaas' sister) Citra is the head of a tribe and throughout the entire game she guides Jason into doing what she needs him to do to become the warrior she needs him to be. The warrior is a legend within the tribe who's role is to be a strong person who is worthy enough of having a child with Citra, making the child be the actual warrior. After the warrior plants the seed in Citra the warrior is then killed as they are regarded as useless, this role was once supposed to be Vaas but after certain events it is now Jason's role. After Jason saves all of his friends and finds a way off the island he has a chance to escape with all of his remaining friends but instead chooses to stay on the island to take down the big bad guy, Hoyt. This choice is lead by Citra making him believe that his friends are holding him back from saving the island from Hoyt. So what does Jason's story have to do with Vaas? Well Vaas is the main obstacle that gets in his way for the first 2 acts of the game. And every time we encounter Vaas more is revealed about the character. Vaas is just a pawn for Hoyt has to do what he says otherwise he will die and Hoyt seems to be one of two people who he's afraid off (the other person being Citra) Throughout the entire game we see Vaas project his voice in a very loud and over exaggerated way but that isn't the real Vaas. The only time we see the real Vaas is from a conversation between Vaas and Hoyt where Vaas sounds alot more tame than he does anywhere else in the game. This is because of his fear of Hoyt, he has no power against him therefore he cant challenge him or intimidate him in anyway unlike everyone else where he puts on an act to appear more dominant and intimidating as that's what he must do to survive and remain on top. If he didn't act unpredictable someone would've killed him in an attempt to take his spot but because of his unpredictability and his extreme aggression no one wants to challenge that. It's just a facade but that doesn't mean he doesn't believe in what he says. He's just being a more exaggerated version of himself. But how did he even get to this point in the first place? As I have said before he is Vaas' sister so he was part of the tribe and he was originally going to take the role of the warrior but obviously Vaas didn't want to have sex with his sister to then die after. Despite being controlled by Citra to be the warrior he is destined to be Vaas broke out of that manipulation and was given one of two choice. Choice one: Stay within the tribe and have have sex with his sister to then die afterwards. Or choice two: Join Hoyt and help him reign terror across the island and help him with human trafficking. Forcing Vaas to do many terrible things that he has to do otherwise he will die. On top of that he will become a drug addict. Neither of the two options are good for Vaas but one results in death and the other doesn't so that's why we see him working for Hoyt during the events of Far Cry 3. Vaas' decision to abandon his sister has lead to her manipulating Jason into replacing Vaas and taking his role. Citra wants Jason to kill Vaas as not only does it tie up a loose end by getting rid of the man who betrayed the tribe but it's also the final step in competing Jason's transformation into the warrior. Now with all of the context displayed I can finally move into the sole reason why I wanted to talk about this topic in the first place. The interactions between Jason and Vaas. The best way to compare Jason and Vaas is with the ying and yang symbol with Jason being the good guy with a bit of darkness within him and Vaas being the evil guy with a bit of good within him and as the game progresses you start to see that the more these two characters interact the more Jason becomes corrupt and the more Vaas becomes the more sympathetic character. The result of this connection is Jason Brody becoming the predecessor of Vaas. Jason's identity gets stripped from him by nature and is morphed into a killing machine by the people around him. In other words, Vaas was once like Jason and Jason will eventually be like Vaas and Vaas is aware of this and sees himself in Jason. This brings us to the final confrontation between Jason and Vaas. After being drugged by Vaas, Jason immerses himself into his mind and what we see is a sequence of events leading up to the final pay off to this story. The first thing we see is Jason putting a gun to his head while an image of Vaas flashes in between. This is interpreted as Jason ending his identity to becoming Vaas. The next thing we see is Vaas pole dancing while switching image with Citra. This is a reference to the sexual relationship between Vaas and Citra and how now Jason is experiencing the same thing Vaas did. This is reinforced by the next image we see where we see Vaas and Citra doing something sexual with Jason quickly flashing over Vaas. After this sequence Jason approaches Vaas and Vaas mocks Jason for trying to become Citras new warrior. We then get to see one of the most interesting details throughout this whole story. As Vaas continuously prompts Jason to shoot him, Jason hesitates. This draws the illusion that Jason doesn't want to kill Vaas and neither does Vaas want to kill Jason. After Jason does shoot Vaas, Vaas quotes "you are me and I am you" finally confirming the connection between the two. Jason then has to kill Vaas a multiple of times, which is a comparison to Vaas' infamous Defintion of Insanity monologue and also a reference to Vaas attempting to kill Jason multiple times throughout the game. After this sequence we get the final scene with the two. Vaas' final words are very biblical, comparing himself to jesus and being reborn, in this instance, reborn into Jason. Jason then stabs Vaas to death, Vaas not fighting back, then we see Jason pass out. This final interaction represents Jason finally completing his transformation into Vaas. Spending the final act of the game taking down Hoyt in which Vaas wanted to but wasn't capable due to a lack of power and insecurity in which Jason doesn't have these flaws, atleast he doesn't have these flaws to the same degree as Vaas. And not only take down Hoyt but to hopefully reject Citra and to acknowledge her manipulation and deception before it gets too late for Jason but that decision lies with the player. And that's the story of Jason and Vaas.
Now recently the Far Cry 6 DLC brought back Vaas to reveal alot more about his backstory and how it reinforces the story told in Far Cry 3 as we dont learn many new things about Vaas just more information that proves of what we know which makes this DLC really faithful to the original game and I am very happy with how they handled this characters return. I want to start this section off by talking about the gameplay. I love the that to progress in the game Vaas has to kill Jason multiple times, referencing the definition of insanity monologue. At first you'll notice that Vaas doesn't outright crazy as he did in Far Cry 3 as he is speaking to himself in a normal tone voice but this makes sense as in the original he uses his craziness as a facade to appear more intimidating except with that conversation with Hoyt. That conversation with Hoyt is the real him which is what we hear here and that makes sense because there's no reason for Vaas to act crazy on his own due to there being no one to appear threatening to. One of my favourite things about seeing Vaas' perspective is seeing how crazy Jason looks. Just from the first scene of Vaas' point of view from the initial final confrontation between the two you can see how unhinged Jason looks just from his eyes and from watching that you can totally believe Jason being the predecessor to Vaas. For the most part we see some of Vaas' memories that just confirm what we already knew such as Citra manipulating Jason into killing Vaas but we also see Citra manipulating Vaas into killing Jason which I believe that's meant to show how the Jason and Vaas both suffered from Citras control over them. We also get to see more sexual tension between Citra and Vaas just showing how bad it was for Vaas. There was also a memory where Vaas planned to kill Hoyt which confirms him using Jason to take over for him to take down Hoyt. One of my favourite scenes from this DLC is the aftermath of Citra attempting to stab Vaas with a knife. Vaas reflects on what happened and almost broke out of her manipulation by question it but then immediately went to believing that he was in the wrong and tries to make it up for Citra for being mad about it. It's also reinforced that the first time Vaas ever killed was for Citra which is just more proof that she is the main reason why Vaas is the way that he is during the events of Far Cry 3. One of the biggest points that this DLC is trying to make is that Citra was the big villian of this story as Vaas is just a tortured soul and Jason was under heavy influence under her. The final act of the DLC is a constant battle between Vaas and multiple enemies and Citras but eventually realises that him killing these enemies over and over again with just more coming is the result of insanity bringing it back to his definition of insanity monologue. As well as this Citra wants Vaas to fight as during his time in the tribe that's all his sister wanted was for Vaas to continuously fight for her to become the warrior she needs, but with both of these being realised by Vaas he decides to stop fighting and to move on from Citra and his past and so he escapes his mind. Then we are followed up with the final scene of the DLC. Finally concluding Vaas' story. The ending is perfect for Vaas as we see him years in the future working as a smuggler making his profits from exporting drugs likely in his own, at which we see him isolated on a beach with nothing but his tennis ball to keep him company along with his beautiful thought provoking monologue reflecting on how much he has suffered and what he has been through to make it to where he is now. People may say how Vaas died in Far Cry 3 so him being alive makes no sense except ever since Far Cry 3 was released back in 2012 there was always speculation that he lives as the final confrontation took place while Jason was drugged and you never got to see Vaas' corpse unlike Buck and Hoyt so it makes sense that he lived. Living the life that he deserved. They could potentially bring him back for a future game to make him a key character which I'd much rather they didn't but if they had to then I would rather see Vaas as some sort of merchant who supplies the main character with goodies to take down the next bad guy rather than being the main bad guy himself. But with that being said, that's the story of Vaas and why he is such a memorable character. Thank you for reading.
PRIMARY RESEARCH
I asked what are your thoughts on Vaas as a character?
Response #1
Vaas is a very interesting character. Out of any of those games that I’ve played, he still my favourite. His mixture of aggression, obsession and fragility make him one of the best characters I’ve seen in a video game. He is clearly insane, yet also uses this layer as an outward facade towards other characters. This only makes the inner turmoil, which is discovered through story progession and hidden details, much more fascinating. Also none of this would be possible without the amazing performance of Michael Mando.
Response #2
In a weird way I would consider Vaas as relatable. The reason I say this is because there is one very iconic quote that he says at some point in the game which is to do with insanity. His definition of insanity is doing the exact same thing over and over again expecting things to change. The reason I think this makes him relatable is because I feel like for ordinary people like us we r normally doing the same routine daily, with all of us hoping that one day that we can all become something more, whether it’s coming a famous musician or being a famous celebrity or just being stupidly rich. But the chances of that happening is incredibly low, hence y I think he’s quote on insanity makes him quite a relatable character, because deep down he is also someone like us who just wants to break the same old cycle that we follow daily.

Vaas 3
- His acts of crazy and unpredictability is used to intimidate the people around him so he stays on top, this is proved to be a façade because of a conversation between Vaas and Hoyt.
- Jason starts off as innocent but after watching his older brother die and killing for the first time that’s when his transformation begins.
- Citra tries to manipulate Vaas into being her warrior but in the end he had the choice of picking Citra (forced to commit incest then killed) or join Hoyt (take part in a human trafficking system while becoming a drug addict) he chose Hoyt which makes him more easy to sympathise with
- Vaas definition of insanity monologue perfectly capitulates him trying to kill Jason multiple times but Jason keeps surviving
- First time Vaas ever killed was for Citra essentially causing Vaas to become the insane man he is during the events of far cry 3
- The longer Jason is on the island the more ruthless he becomes, he likes the adrenaline he gets from being on the island but this turns him into more of an insane man but he has to go through with this transition in order to save the people he loves.
- Vaas facade isn’t too out of the ordinary for him, I believe it’s just a more exaggerated version of him. He is still insane.
-
Vaas 6
- The repetition of killing Jason
- On his own he speaks in a normal tone which fits with the original where his craziness is mostly a facade and the conversation with Vaas and Hoyt is the real him (he has no reason to act crazy on his own due to thee being no one to look threatening to)
- Citra manipulates Jason into killing Vaas, replacing him (confirms what was seen in the original)
- Sexual relationship between Citra and Vaas (confirms what was seen in the original)
- Vaas perspective makes Jason look like the crazy one which fits the original statement
- Confirms that Citra is the big villain of this story
- The ending is perfect for Vaas
- Vaas didn’t agree with Hoyt taking over the island killing natives and wanted to fight back at Hoyt because of it
- After Citra attempted to kill Vaas he reflected about it and almost broke out of the manipulation by questioning it but then immediately went to believing that he is in the wrong and tries to make it up for Citra
- Here it is reinforced that the first time he ever killed was for Citra which proves that she is the reason why Vaas is the way that he is now.
- Despite being under Hoyts orders he must’ve felt free and in control of himself which he didn’t feel being under Citra’s control
- At the end of the DLC he stops fighting to try move on from Citra and his past, this leads to the final scene of old man Vaas on a beach alone but at peace.
- During the events of far cry 6 Vaas is a smuggler making his profit from exporting drugs (likely cocaine) likely on his own.

Personal Statement
I am applying for this chosen course because I want to push myself to the next step and have the opportunity to learn new and advanced skills along with furthering and improving my pre-existing skills.
This subject interests me because I feel media is something I can put a part of myself into which always makes the final product meaningful to me; I like to put my own style onto projects and project my own interests.
I believe I am suitable for this course because I am a hard worker who sets high goals and have been told that I am persistent. I always get projects done by the deadline and I have excellent communication skills needed for teamwork.
I have had the opportunity to create stories and bring them to life which is one of my favourite interests about the course, I love having the creative freedom to create what I want.
One achievement I like to look back on is the time I was the director of a live show and I had to manage a group of people while being the main actor of the show. Some of the original cast was not in college that day so I had to quickly find 3 people from my class willing to help and had to inform them of their role during the filming. I was under high pressure with performing and directing however by the end i was able to be flexible, manage and adapt. I really enjoy creating stories about morality and projecting them into film which can lead to some really creative situations and I believe having the audience question what they would do in the same situations the characters end up in would stick out to the audience and make the experience a lot more memorable. I have previously worked at a cinema which required communication and time management skills, both being key skills that I use in everyday activities such as working in groups and meeting a deadline. These key skills allow me to be flexible with my creativity and helps me set boundaries on what I can or can’t do within the time frame.
After completing the course I wish to be involved within the media industry either in an apprenticeship or a full time job. I wish to work my way up within the industry and try to one day lead a collection of multiple feature films and documentaries. I want to have more opportunities within the industry so I can have more responsibility.
I cannot wait to study further into the industry and learn more skills that will help improve my ability as a filmmaker and make my future projects be the best they can possibly be.

DRAFT COVER LETTER
Dear Nargess
My name is Daniel Jamieson. I am 18 years old and I live in High Wycombe.
I have recently completed 2 years at Amersham College Campus where I studied creative media. This included direction, editing and scrip-writing. I made my own documentary and short film and earned a distinction for both productions.
But what I really need is a little experience working in a professional production environment.
I'm happy to bring my creativity to the environment whilst learning new skills from the people I would be working with.
I'm punctual, reliable, hard working and easy to get along with.
Thanks for taking the time to read my letter.
Sincerely,
Daniel Jamieson
