COLLEGE WORK

UNIT 9

Full Live Show

Reflection

I was working on my own to create a Live TV show with pre-recorded elements (interview / AD) a con for working on my own is that I have to write up everything from the risk assessment to the storyboard instead of splitting it between multiple people but the pro is that this gave me full creative freedom to do what I want and this freedom lead to the final production. The filming itself was a very memorable experience, firstly I managed to get all of the preparing done without no issue, had autocue on memory stick, brought in all props, had the lighting and cameras set up the way it was planned. There was one problem with the lights and that was the misunderstanding of light exposure, I did not have any lights on the audience and I thought they would look fine as the light would reflect from the stage to the audience but that would look really unwatchable so Attila helped set up a floodlight on the audience. This can be used as a learning experience, don't leave the focus of a camera shot underexposed. One thing about the Mustache was that for the first half of the live show it is worn upside down which adds to the humiliation of the character and even though it was unintentional it worked out more in my favor. I also wore the ear piece purposely wrong to make the host more into a humiliation but not wrong to the point where I couldn't use it. As for the cast everyone turned up as expected at the times they said they would turn up with the exclusion of the audience. I was lacking in audience so Tony was kind enough to get 3 extra people from the class to participate. Everyone involved was very helpful and very patient and I am very grateful for them including some of their ideas into the show for example I told Shaun who was on camera 1 to do whatever he wanted, he had full creative freedom and he made some really nice shots, another example would be Mia giving an idea where the audience would clap when Owens Mustache falls off and it is a great inclusion that increases the chaos of that scene. Before and especially during the filming I was incredibly anxious about anything going wrong and I felt stressed out because I felt underprepared and I felt that because of how many things I have to watch out for during recording, it felt overwhelming but considering how well it went that must have been in my head and it was just stress. Overall I believe I performed really well considering the pressure I was on and still managed to deliver expectations and I am very proud with the end result. After the filming I was very relieved that it all went to plan and that I didn't have to stress about it no more and was very excited to watch back the footage and get editing. I believe everyone involved enjoyed being a part of it as I received lots of positive feedback from everyone and I even got a few shocked reactions from some of the people who first walked in which is a great thing to see. One thing that went really well would be the acting of the audience, all I told them was to act unimpressed and that they paid £ 30 just to help them get in character and they all improvised hilarious reactions just from their own initiative which I love. What was good about this whole experience was that it gave me more experience in all of the aspects of creating a live show and that's because I approached this unit solo, truly testing my limits which was a risky thing to do as it could've lead to me being behind on work and not getting everything done by the deadline and it was stressful especially during the filming but the thrill was worth everything. The only bad thing about this experience is the stress I felt while put under the position of being my own director and main actor but as I've said the thrill I got from doing that made it all worth it. My contribution was very positive as I was the driving force of my production of the show. Other people who contributed were very useful such as the people who helped with the studio but especially the graphic designer who made the logo of the show for me for free. The same goes for the person who composed the shows theme as well as being the doctor in the AD. The show went well because of everyones contribution to the creation of the show, the show turned out way more successful because of everyones efforts and another reason why the show turns out as a success is because of the freedom to do whatever I wanted with the show and that to so many creative and cool ideas, some scrapped and some fully utilized to add to the chaos of the show. Some things may not have went well because of me being unprepared as mentioned previously but it all went well in the end even if I was underprepared so if I was underprepared then I managed to get exactly what I want while being under prepared which shows how well I work under pressure. I learned that I am capable of working under pressure and I have the ability to take control on a set to get the shots we need. I have also learned more on how to bring a character more to life and how to make them likeable or dislikeable. This unit has really improved a very broad range of skills from writing the story and creating the characters to performing those characters and setting up shots to capture these characters in moments that reveal more about who they are. Skills I need to develop more on is editing. I struggle to use premier pro and would like to get better with the adobe app as that would be an incredibly useful tool. This unit has lead me to a more clear idea of what I want to do for this years FMP and how I want to execute the production for it, story / character wise and also cinematic wise. If I were to do this unit all over again I would make the vision mixers and audience and cameramen more informed in what they have to do especially before the day of shooting rather than showing them what to do on day of shooting as that wastes their time and I want to avoid wasting peoples time especially if they are spending it on helping me.

UKESSAYS

ACCURACY

The accuracy I provide in the show are the dialogue one of the characters have, this dialogue shows what it is truly like to have split personality disorder but this information is over shadowed by the host of the show and this is done because the focus of the show is on the downfall of the host and not the accuracy of the side effects of split personality disorder.

BIAS

This show does not target specific type of people but instead it targets the character of Owen Ginnett who is a self-centred unlikable man and no one watching would feel targeted because no one would see themselves as that type of bad person as that would mean they would have to be self-aware and another reason why people wouldn’t see themselves as the character is because the characters main downfall is that he is given fame which he shouldn’t have and most of the audience would not have had the experience of having fame.

PRESENTER

The presenter in this show is utilised in a completely different way. The host in this show is still used to tell a story both visually and via dialogue, however the story is about the presenter himself and who he is as a character and what happens to him throughout the show and how this affects him as a character.

Post Production

Logo

I got in contact with a graphic designer and they managed to produce this amazing logo for the show. It perfectly captures the style I am going for. He chose the right colours too as the yellow and red contrast well. This image combined with the music make for a very good idea of what the show will be like. This shows what type of character Owen is, Narcissistic and pretentious!

Credits

The same graphic designer created the credits for me to use for the ending of the show. The roles are in red and the people involved are in yellow. A cool contrast of colours and fits the theme of the show as well as continuity with the logo. The AD logo being at the bottom to show the sponsor.

Music

This includes the intro soundtrack and outro soundtrack. Main difference is that the intro has the booming voice that introduces Owen where as the outro doesn't. I am very pleased with how Henry created this and am very thankful for him taking the time to produce this.

AD

This is the final fully edited version of the chosen AD that is linked to my unit 13 FMP.

The same graphic designer I contacted has designed me this logo for this fictional company that is shown in the AD.

They have also designed a lower third for the AD that includes the characters name and the fictional companies logo.

The designer made this to go with the lower third as well as the actual gmail account of the fictional company

This is the gmail that is displayed in the AD and i have created the gmail account so it is now a real account anyone can email so feel free to contact this fictional company if you want to be part of a safe, legal experiment :)

References

Here includes all outside visuals and sound effects used for the editing that weren't originally created by me or the people helping me.

This is a sound effect of a door slam from a distance. This was overlayed over the footage of the 2 audience members leaving.

This sound effect is used at the start of the show when Owen is Introduced to the show and starts pointing at everyone.

This sound is used at the very end of the show before it cuts to the test card. Implying that when Owen had a hissy fit and attacked the table one of the bottles fell off and smashed.

The sound of the audience clapping is used for the beginning of the show as Owen turns around and is being introduced by the shows theme song.

These canned laugh tracks are used throughout the whole show and is there to give the illusion that the audience is laughing but it's obvious that they're not because of how overused these laugh tracks are.

This visual is used at the end of the show only for 3 seconds. This visual is more of a transition from the last time you see Owen to the more official Test Card. This is also a slight reference to the characters costume.

This is used at the very end of the show. It is the final shot of the production. This is more of a reference to Owens costume and the timer is synced up to the actual time of the video itself.

Production

Live Show

The last 15 minutes of recording from the perspective of the mixer cut (Has Audio)

The last 15 minutes of recording from the perspective entirely from camera 1 (has Audio because the headphones were taken out because crew member was using them) (Audience & Host Camera)

The last 15 minutes of recording from the perspective entirely from camera 2 (No Audio) (Audience Camera)

The last 15 minutes of recording from the perspective entirely from camera 3 (No Audio) (Host Camera)

GoPro footage of the whole filming process (In the studio) big thanks to Mathew for the footage!

Interview

The Interview took around 40 takes to fully produce and most of them are short so I've included a link to a youtube playlist numbered in order of when they were filmed that includes the whole process from me getting into character to rehearsing to filming the final shot for each scene.

AD #1

For This AD Idea I initially wanted the AD to be anything funny and that's what the other AD is but then i thought about making this a more memorable AD while linking it to my FMP. To achieve this I made this AD stand out by making it the complete opposite of what the rest of the show is like and this AD links to my FMP because it has hints of ideas of what I want to do for my FMP that involves what this character is talking about. The character is played by Henry who also made the theme song for this show.

AD #2

This AD is a scrapped AD where the sole purpose would for it to be funny but in the end I chose the other AD over this. This AD has the exact same guy from the other AD except he's not playing the creepy doctor but instead he's also seen as the butt of the joke which would also take away the humiliation off Owen which is not what I want so I am happy with my decision to go for AD #1 but this AD is still funny to me.

Planning

CREW

Owen Ginnett: Daniel

Richard: Marco

Alleyway Cameraman: Leo

Crew Member: George

Jonas: Henry

Audience: Ethan (L2), Charlotte, Jack, Millie, Mia

Studio Cameraman: Mathew, Tony, Shaun

Autocue: Bradley

Vision mixer: Tobey, Harry

Music: Henry

MUSIC

I will have someone from outside the class to help me come up with an introduction and end of the show sequence. The soundtrack will be intentionally bad but not to the point where It's inaudible. It'll be a mixture of good and bad but the focus is for it to be noticeably bad.

LIGHTING

I plan to have 3 Lights (although it is likely I will use all of the floodlights) on the host and none of the audience. I want the reflection of the stage to bounce to the audience so they aren't in complete darkness but they aren't purposely being lit up. As for the host I want 3 Lights on him. All from different angles and I want 2 of them to be fioodlights and one of them be as beam light but because the beam light are stationary I am perfectly fine using 3 floodlights. I want all of the lights to be on 3500 Celvin lighting up the stage to look like a warm cozy atmosphere and I want them to be on 100%. At the start of the show I want them all to be 0% but then quickly rise to 100% as the camera pans out and the host turns around.

VISION MIXER

My use for the vision mixer will be used for 2 cameras as one camera will be focused on the host and the other camera will be focused on the audience and I will have 2 people operating the vision mixer to switch between the 2 cameras on time by using the script to help them navigate the timing. I will be using a 3rd camera to have as a fixed camera and won't be used during recording but may add a few shots from that camera in the final cut during post production.

SETTING

This is a list of props that will be used in the setting (on the set of the studio) certain changes have happened but only minor as everything will continue like normal. The changes include: leather gloves are no longer being used as the gloves take away mobility (movement) in my hands so it's harder to give more life to the character also the gloves take the attention away off the eye-catching suit. The second change is that I will be including empty alcohol glass on the set. At first there will be no glass bottles on the desk but as the show progresses there will be an increase on the amount of glass bottles. The third change is an addition to the list, I will also be including an A3 poster of my face on the set. The fourth change which is also an addition is that I will be using a comb as I believe this will suit the character more.

Unfortunately there is one thing I wanted to include but is too late to get and that is a cardboard cut out of a real life person called Hasbulla. This cardboard cut out would be used as a sidekick for the show host.

TV SHOW RUNDOWN

This will be printed with 9 copies to be given to the whole crew including myself so on day of recording everyone will know what will happen at certain times and what they need to do during those times. I have excluded the interview section as I have not recorded that yet and won't record it until a day before studio recording so it will be too late to add so my plan to solve this is to edit it in post production.

Updated Show Rundown

This is the updated version of the pre existing show rundown except with this version it's just a more detailed version with more information on what will happen on the set and day of recording. This is mainly targeted to the people working on the vision mixer.

Floor Plan

This is the floor plan to the studio for the day of recording. I've included the 3 cameras and the 3 main floodlight angles I plan to use and the temperature of those floodlights as well as the audience placement as well as the set itself.

RISK ASSESSMENT

For the Risk assessment I have included potential hazards that could potentially occur during production and I have followed that up by including solutions to those hazards that prevent them from happening. The most dangerous realistic hazard should be wires that can be tripped on and that can be resolved by informing everyone where the wires are and using gaffa tape to hold them in place.

Costume

Here are some images of the actual suit in action. The fake moustache really brings it all together. (The pink cowboy hat does not go with the costume)

This is the BBC test card which the suit has a very similar resemblance to and that is intentional as the character wearing the suit is the host of a live show that goes wrong which links to this test card as if something were to go wrong this image would be visible on transmission therefore the characters suit foreshadows what will happen in the show as well as fits the character as a whole.

Storyboard

In this storyboard I show off my visual intent with the live show and I give a detail description using the props I use to layout how the set/each shot will look, such as, gluestick, sign, characters and lighting. Drawing isn't my strong suit but hopefully I atleast gave a detailed description so that anyone can clearly see how I want the show to look and when the show is recorded anyone can look at both this storyboard and the show and clearly see the similarities between the two.

Richard: Thank you Owen, right now I'm feeling pretty good to be honest. I've been having a good day so far

Owen: that's good to hear, so first of all what is it that you have?

Richard: well I have a mental disorder called dissociative personality disorder and what happens is that I occasionally interact with this other person who sounds like me and looks like me but his personality is completely different, like he's the mean version of me.

Owen: I guess you can say that your Richard and he's dick

Richard: yeah...anyway this version of me is someone who I see but no one else can and sometimes he even takes control of me in real life situations and I'm not even aware of it, he mainly comes around when I'm in a dark environment.

I've always struggled learning.

Owen: Cant you ask Dick for help?

Richard: that's it I'm fucking done. You're not taking me seriously. I dont want to be in your stupid show. Get out of my house.

Research

I have decided to approach this by picking out certain mental disorders from the book that I would like to research into then i would go ahead and research into the chosen mental disorders. The mental disorders I would like to research into are;

- Anxiety Disorders

- Personality Disorders

Anxiety Disorder

Anxiety Disorders include disorders that share features of excessive fear and anxiety and related behavioural disturbances. Fear is the emotional response to real or perceived imminent threat, whereas anxiety is anticipation of future threat. Panic attacks feature prominently within the anxiety disorders as a particular type of fear response. Panic attacks are not limited to anxiety disorders but rather can be seen in other mental disorders as well. These feelings can interfere with your daily life and they can be difficult to control and can last a very long time which may start during childhood or during teenage years which can then continue into adulthood. The different examples of anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder (social phobia), specific phobias and separation anxiety disorder. It is possible for you to have more than one anxiety disorder at a time. Sometimes anxiety results from a medical condition that needs treatment. Whatever form of anxiety someone has, it is always treatable but anxiety can get worse the later you leave it which is why it is best to seek help as soon as possible as the worries may not go away on their own. The causes of anxiety disorders aren't fully understood. Life experiences such as traumatic events appear to trigger anxiety disorders in people who are already prone to anxiety. Inherited traits also can be a factor. Anxiety can be a result of medical health issues such as heart disease, diabetes and drug misuse. It may also come from risk factors like trauma, stress build up and the use or misuse or withdrawal of alcohol or drugs which can cause or worsen anxiety. Anxiety disorder can lead to depression, insomnia, social isolation and even suicide. The best way to help reduce the impact of the symptoms is to avoid alcohol and drugs as they may worsen anxiety and may cause another problem of being an addict. Another way that can help is to stay active. Participate in activities that you enjoy and that make you feel good about yourself. Enjoy social interactions and caring relationships, which can lessen your worries.

American Psychiatric Association, APA, 2012-2013, Diagnostic And Statistical Manual Of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition

Personality Disorder

A personality disorder is an enduring pattern of inner experience and behaviour that deviates markedly from the expectations of the individual's culture, is persuasive and inflexible, has an onset in adolescence or early adulthood, is stable over time, and leads to distress or impairable.

American Psychiatric Association, APA, 2012-2013, Diagnostic And Statistical Manual Of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, page 645,

Some medications may help with certain symptoms of DID, such as depression or anxiety. But the most effective treatment is psychotherapy. A healthcare provider with specialized training in mental health disorders, such as a psychologist or psychiatrist, can guide you toward the right treatment. You may benefit from individual, group or family therapy.
Therapy focuses on:

Identifying and working through past trauma or abuse.

Managing sudden behavioral changes.

Merging separate identities into a single identity.

My.ClevelandClinic.org, CC, 2021, Dissociative identity disorder (multiple person disorder)

The Host

The inspiration for the host of the show is the fictional character "Rupert Pupkin" from "The King of Comedy" played by Robert De Niro. The main inspiration is the appearance with the show host having an eye-catching suit and a noticeable Mustache which Rupert also has. The 2 characters also share some character traits such as both being addicted to fame and both wanting to perform in front of an audience.

Set Reference

The type of set I am aiming to create is a unprofessional set that will have props in frame that shouldn't be there for example I will have a wet floor sign visible to the camera in the background and also have beer cans build up overtime on the desk. I will also include props that show of the Hosts narcissistic side such as having a jar of M&M's with his face on them on the desk and having his face of him printed out taped over the set. The image used below is the set from the Eric Andre show which is a parody of a talk show and he goes for an intentional dull and generic look for his set of him. I will go for a similar approach of having an intentionally bad set. I won't have it empty but I will have props that would not usually be there.

Music Reference

The Inspiration I have used for the intro and outro soundtrack is similar to what many other late night show hosts use which is a jingle and jazzy type of beat. My version is going to be intentionally bad but not bad to the point that it's a complete mess, instead it is still audible and recognizable. The voice introducing the host will purposely be drowned out by the music but not to the point that you can't hear him, everyone will still know what he is saying but the sound drowning him out is noticeable.

Proposal/Rundown

A "live" TV show with pre-recorded elements

The main element I am going for is self-referential humour, the most of the show will be an unlikable character who is constantly trying to be funny by mocking the people he interviews but always fail to make the audience laugh and the comedy will come from the reaction of the audience (actors) to the disrespectful and unfunny jokes he makes. Another plot that will help with the comedy is that this character will have no clue what he is doing as the pre-recorded footage will have a skit of him getting a random person off the street to be a cameraman for him for the interview, This will show two things about this character, One is that he cannot properly edit as he leaves in footage that was not meant to be there in the first place meaning that he is not skilled enough to be where he is and the second is that it shows he is not well organised as he hired a cameraman minutes before the interview and he does not have a big enough budget which shows irony because he is using a studio. The main thing I have to keep in mind when approaching this is for the host to be the butt of the joke and not the character with the mental disorder and the inclusion of the audience making it meta will be the key to achieving that.

The "Live" footage mainly include 2 camera angles. One camera fixed on the host and a second camera on the audience (4/5 people) the audience will act bored, unimpressed and disgusted with the host. At some point I will have 1 person from the audience leave the room and have and have the camera on them as they leave while the host assuming this person went to have a toilet break. At some point after this incidence I have the pre-recorded footage play then after an unfunny part plays the camera will then cut back to the audience to then show 2 more empty seats. Meanwhile the host will be playing along with the pre-recorded footage making unfunny jokes.

The pre-recorded footage will contain 2 sections of footage. The first being an acted out interview with the host (who will be in the studio) interviewing someone with a split personality disorder. This interview will include the host being disrespectful and unfunny essentially setting up the joke that will pay off during the "live" footage in the studio. This whole section will be between 2-4 minutes long

The second section to the pre-recorded footage will be a fake sponsor for the show where an acquaintance of the host will be introducing the sponsor with editing so bad its funny. This sponsor will be between 1-2 minutes long.

My role in this is to be the creative lead in the project making sure I get the people for the jobs required and to make sure they are able to do their roles and to also write the script and screenwriting of the show and to edit the whole show along with playing the host and to research into how people with certain mental disorders behave to then implement that research into the character with the split personality disorder from the pre-recorded interview.

Originally this project was meant to be educational but I decided to add a twist and to make it comedic and entertaining which will be more challenging but if executed right the payoff will be way more beneficial.
