MONTHLY JOURNALS
MARCH 2022
So this week we finally managed to finish the rest of the filming for our unit 10 + 12 short film. We filmed scenes of me walking into the lobby and that was done by having the camera up in the warzone area (second floor) with the receptions permission. Mathew would then say when hes ready signalling to Toby to signal me to walk in at the right time and we didn't have any issues. We would the film me walking through a corridor and experiencing a sharp pain which we did in 3 takes after Mathew was testing where he wanted the camera to be and our final scene we filmed was the mirror scene which was the final scene in the short film. We set up next to a college toilet and put a piece of paper on the door saying that we are filming along with this we had Jack be outside the door making sure no one walked in. The filming went according to plan. I acted out the scene while Mathew filmed with the camera while Toby took behind the scene pictures. We wanted to be quick so were less likely to have someone go to the toilet. I also helped Tony and Jack's group finish their filming for their short film. This filming session was the most independence I got with the Lumix and I'm very happy with how much I remember in terms of how to use the camera. I dont think the shots I did were special but I am very glad to know how to operate the camera and the group was also very happy with how the shots looked. After all of this I am now confident in using the Lumix for filming my FMP which I should have my first FMP film session in just 9 days from now (March 14th) for sunday our group will overlook the rough cut of the 5 minute short film we are doing and all contribute torwards colour grading and adding anything else that could help improve the overall quality of the film. As a group we have film the rest of the sound foley that we need for the short film. We filmed the sound foley of me doing the actions I did in the video and I would recreate the actions as I watch the video to sync them up as much as possible. Any slight sound that isn't synced up would be fixed in post production by Toby. To record the sound foley we were originally going to use the sound booth but that was booked out for the rest of the week by another group so to adapt we did sound foley in a quiet area of the college campus and filmed whenever we had the chance as every few minutes there would be a noise that would cut us off. Next time we will book the sound studio in advance but we still managed to get what we needed with minimal trouble. To finish off unit 10-12 the rest of the editing was complete and the final cut was published and everything else was overlooked to double check we have the requirements to hand in everything and we do. We all just had to finalize our websites and put everything up on the cloud. Unit 10-12 is finished.
FEBRUARY 2022
The corridor loop scene has been recorded. First we got our equipment and got set up in the corridor and waited an hour for it to be 4PM and so everyone is in lesson or gone. During the meantime we made sure everything was set up and we practiced as much as we could so we could get used to what we need to do. We tried to set up the spotlight but it turned out that it made the visuals look worse and harder to see the character within the corridor so we took out the spotlight in the end and stuck with the lights build in the corridor but turned off the middle set of lights so it was mostly dark. I was acting as the character in this scene and I had to time my actions perfectly do that the loop matches and makes sense and to help time that i used a metronome which is a customized timer for beats per minutes. I vouched for 1 beat every second as I thought that would help me the most for remembering. This wouldn't matter as we are going to add sound foley to this scene. When it finally got to filming it took us roughly 3 attempts to get the first take right and after that the rest of the scene went smoothly and we ended up being satisfied with the take. A few people were curious to what we were doing and asked what was going on and we explained and they found it interesting. After we finished filming for the main scene we then proceeded to go to a quiet location in the campus (at this point it was 5PM) and we proceeded to do sound foley of footsteps at multiple different paces along with the sound of the wind echoing through a quiet stairwell. After we finished all of the filming and sound foley we then put all of the equipment away. We also helped Tony and Jack's group with their next scene and this is the first time I got to film with the Lumix with me using the camera and i enjoyed using it. It was very windy but we adapted by using our bags and drinks and such as paper weights for the lights equipments we have such as the script. It was a good experience for me for using the Lumix. We also updated the camera shot list so that it fits the current script and locations we finally decided on. During the half term we went on a call online as a group to decide which of the takes we wanted to use for the final film and how we are going to edit the film.
JANUARY 2022
For unit 10+12 I have gotten in a group with Mathew and Toby. As i am in a group one of the biggest skills to use is communication as being able to tell where my whole group is and what each person is doing is very important. We have decided on an idea of a purely suspense short film with sound foley and visuals being our main focus, not so much of the dialogue. We have all decided to base our style on David Fincher as we will take inspiration from his lighting and storytelling. We have all mainly focused on the script, each focusing on different scenes then reading through them all together and changing it until we are all satisfied then repeat the process until we finalize the script. We have aldo started on a shot list but because we have focused on the script we haven't made much progress on the shot list. Budgeting has been completely sorted. We made a fake £100,000 budget for one scene from our short film attempting to make a realistic budget with that £100,000. This was a test for the real budget for the short film. We all know what to buy and when by. Our plan is to get the pre-production done as quick as possible without rush so then we can film during dark hours easier during college because it's winter. Today we finalized the script but we still have to put it in the final format of a script. Non of us are capable of formatting our script into an official script but we will watch videos and tutorials to help us achieve that. Other than that we mostly worked on our shot list and figured out what we are shooting and how we are shooting it. More of the shotlist has been planned and we have prepared more for when we film in the dark room. We will create a mood board full of our inspirations for this short film such as David Fincher or games such as Call of Duty Cold War. We will then come to a decision on what picture profile we will use for our short film. I have done some online research and have looked up templates to help me understand how to write in a professional script format and I have started it using the correct font and text size. Although i may be doing something wrong my plan is to get the rest of the script done in this format before Nick's lessin then have Nick assess it and spot out what I can do to improve the formatting of the script then use that as experience for when I write the script for my FMP. Today I have fully finished writing our 3rd draft of our script in the professional format. It's great that I now know how to write a script for my FMP and I've also fully got my primary research and placed it in the research document and as a group we fully finished the shot list. We also spent our 3 hour long break practicing with the Lumix camera and different lenses. I've practiced how to set up and take down the tripod which had wheels on it and I also now understand how lenses work for example the bigger the gap between the two numbers then the thicker the glass and the thicker the glass the bigger the zoom. The bigger the number the further it zooms into long distances and captures that footage and the shorter the number then the range is closer to the human eye. That's my understanding of it. Although we struggled to pull off a dolly zoom due to the floor not being smooth so we contacted a student who has a course set in the theatre to see if the floors are smooth and who to contact to use the room. We have also contacted the head of the dark room via email about filming a scene in there. On Tuesday we have to present to the class and show them what we have done. I will be talking about the research, script, location scouting and risk assessment. We have presented to the class about what we have done so far and what we are planning on doing next and we have heard the other groups situations with their project and from other groups I've learnt how other groups document certain aspects and I've taken inspiration from various groups for the call sheet and breakdown sheet and how other groups have structured their storyboard. This will help me for when I have to complete these documents for my FMP. We have gone out testing where to shoot for our flashback scene and how long it takes us to set up our equipment. We practiced how long and we got an average of 10 minutes and we also tested a few shots from our test shot sheet in the LOG format. We are satisfied with our results and are more prepared for our filming and I'm more prepared for my FMP learning more about the LUMIX camera which I've decided will be the camera I will use for my FMP. I looked into theatre acting to look for inspiration for Unit 10+12 and my FMP and I learned how much the actors have to use their body language to convey the characters emotions and I want to use that especially since the 5 minute short film is mostly visuals and I am the main character so I want to use theatre acting as a base for how I approach playing this character. Mathew and Toby helped me understand the Lumix camera more and I've learnt how to put on and off a camera lense, how to put in the battery and SD card and how to change the settings for the Iris, ISO and Shutterspeed and what each of them do. I still have alot more to learn about the camera before I go put independently recording with it for my FMP but this is still really helpful and I will try to learn about the Lumix as much possible before I officially start my FMP in under 2 months from now. We have set up 2 recording sessions, one in the theatre and one in the dark room and they both take place on the same day so us preparing and practicing how to set up will come very useful to us when we film those scenes. We learn more about how to use certain lights and which lights are portable with the battery and which lights require a plug, we also learnt to use the gloves for certain lights to handle the heat, which we will add to the risk assessment. We have finished the risk assessment with 9 full hazards. Filming was very successful as we have pulled off the dolly zoom as well as the dark room one shot along with all of the theatre shots all complete. All of our ambitious ideas are over and completed to a great standard except for the corridor scene. We still have to film that. We filmed alot of behind the scene pictures and overall this was a great experience as I have learned how realistic the time takes to set everything up for a scene and to perform many takes to perfect the scenes. We got exactly what we wanted, we got the shots we wanted, we got the permission we wanted and at the end of the day this will help me for my FMP. I've learnt what diegetic and non-diegetic sounds are. The difference between the two is that diegetic audio is when the audio that plays during a scene is audio that all of the characters hear such as the sound of someone talking or someone hitting a wall. Non-diegetic sound is when audio plays and the only people able to hear it is the focused character of that scene and the audience, an example of this would be inner dialogue that the character had with themself, or it can be normal sounds such as footsteps but only that character can hear them and no one else. Me and my group have took this information and discussed about how we can implement this into our unit 10+12. We have subconsciously put this audio idea into our short film but now we are self aware of it and was able to locate what sounds we need to include for sound foley and which one of those sounds are diegetic or non-diegetic and why that is, what does it have to do with the story, how does it compliment the overall short film. For us we are using these sounds to display the main characters state of mind. This character is mentally unhealthy and we can help portray that just with sound for example something as simple as the sound of a penny dropping in the distance with no cause of it. We are experimenting with these audio ideas. Today I helped another group (Tony and Jack) film 2 scenes for their short film and my role was to act as a drug dealer for scene 1 and to help operate the boom mic and to set up the tripod as well as carrying the equipment as well as paying attention to the Lumix being used so I could learn for my FMP. The day went successful for me because I learnt alot but not so much for the group I was helping. They weren't prepared so it took an hour to set up and they didn't have any costumes or any props so I had to improvise a drug deal scene with no drop props and i did that by turning my college ID into a keycard that has access to a lot of drugs which doesn't make sense but as their genre is comedy I'm sure it'll pass but they did end up filming the 2 scenes they needed. I want to help them for future scenes so I can learn more and get more experience so for my FMP. I want to use the Lumix as much as possible. We filmed the flashback scene for our short film and it went really well. I brought in the fake blood and Toby brought in the prop knife and the 3 of us got the Lumix and boom mic along with the props and headed down to the woods and set everything up and filmed a POV shot so I got to use the Lumix and an over the shoulder shot and everything else on the shot lost for the flashback scene. One negative thing that happened was that there were planes flying near the college and as we were filming outside the audio would pick up the plane but we came prepared and used an app that showed where the RAF plane was and where it was heading and planned when to film. We had roughly 2 minutes of filming before the plane cycled back and made noise for roughly a minute and as it was going in a circle we had to repeat this process. The fake blood was put on tissue which was then smeared over my hand and the prop knife and it looked really realistic we were all impressed. We then filmed the scenes with the bloody hands and finished filming. As my hands were bloody I couldnt help carry equipment back up the hill to college so in preparation I contacted one of my friends from a different course who didn't have lesson to come down (this was before I applied the blood) and so when we finished we were able to head back up with no problem. Filming a scene for our short filming and helping another group with their short film made me realise how prepared our group was which made me more confident that our group would be able to finish this unit on time to a good standard and also gives me confidence for my FMP.
DECEMBER 2021
I have now finished my evaluation talking about what went well and what I struggled with and what I learnt from the unit so now unit 11 is finished and now I will wait for the assignment for the next unit to drop but until then i will continue to plan my FMP.
NOVEMBER 2021
Over half term I have created 3 showreel drafts using the planned footage and music i have chosen and I really like what I've made and it has given me a better idea and a clearer mind of how I want to create my final draft showreel. I've also been tasked to create a commercial/advert and I've researched into what type of products i wanted to make an advert for and how i would make that advert. My main inspiration would be a scene from better call saul and I believe that is the route I want to take for this upcoming project but before I go ahead with making the advert I want to practice for the interview I will be having with Nargess where I will be having an interview with Nargess applying for a position at Channel 4.
I have been looking into different styles and I've come to the realisation that I've already had a style (when it comes to story) and I've been subconsciously doing it all along. That style is the theme of morality what people would consider right or wrong. I've used this for my FMP especially in the extended version and for the Owen Ginnett show with the host making fun if his guests and now with this advert with a salesman selling a scummy product to get money out of people's pockets. I like this theme as you can create very interesting situations using morally grey setups and people will have different answers which is the most interesting part.
I have completed my mock interview with Nargess and overall I had great feedback complementing my answers and my mannerisms but the main thing I need to improve on is projecting my voice to make me appear more compliment.
I've fully completed the research for my advert backed up eith Harvard referencing, I looked into how a salesman should dress and how to advertise a product to a customer. I've also done the treatment for my advert where overall I stated what the advert is and what I'm trying to achieve with this advert.
Currently for this unit I have now fully finished with my CV and cover letter for the mock interview which I have done and I have also fully completed my professional showreel with 3 overall drafts and the base story for each one, more detail for the chosen draft. As for the advert I have done my research and found everything I need to know to progress with the advert (supported with Harvard referencing) I’ve come up with a first draft script which I will make a second draft next and I have stated on my website my inspiration along with a treatment for my advert. All I have to do for my advert is finalize the script and record and edit the footage. I have not yet started the research paper or my personal statement but I will be working on them with Nick showing us how. For future I will use the templates up on cloud to help me with my personal statement. As for now my next step is finishing my advert.
I have finished my second draft which will be the final draft for my advert script. This time I used the customer to show more of a more exaggerated example of how corrupt salesman can be and the ending is heavily inspired by a scene from Bo Burnahms "Inside" I've also got the footage of the customer section so now all I need is the footage of the salesman.
I have finished my second draft for my personal statement, I will check with multiple people I know to see what they think I should and shouldn’t add to help me with my draft 3. I have also started on my research paper on symmetrical storytelling and have asked 3 people what their thoughts are on the topic of a character whose main focus is symmetrical storytelling. This will be used as primary research. I have took notes down for the research paper and I believe I know enough to get started on it. As for the advert I have created multiple scripts for multiple adverts and are in the process of the productio0n for all of the planned adverts. My next step is to record the scenes needed for my advert as well as continuing my research paper in the meantime.
I have finished the whole production process of the adverts and in the middle of editing them which should not take long, I have made more progress on my research paper with all of the primary research I need along with a potential video form of the research paper I may do if I have enough time. My personal statement is complete along with my CV, Cover letter and professional showreel.
The adverts are all fully edited and uploaded to my website and I have made more progress on my research paper but not a major amount because I spent most of my time on editing the adverts, my next goal is to finish the research paper then make an evaluation of this unit and if I have enough time I will make a video form of the research paper and include that on my website too.
The research paper is completed and I am very satisfied with the result especially since this was a topic that I am personally passionate about, next I will focus on my evaluation.
OCTOBER 2021
The studio recording got pushed back to October 13th due to other groups having the times I already chose but that is not a problem as it gives me more time to prepare although a bad side to this is that the recording will take place 2 days before the deadline although this shouldn't be a massive problem as I've already discussed with my teachers and my deadline will be extended but either way I will aim to complete the unit as quick as I can without rushing anything. The pre recorded interview has been filmed and the AD has also been filmed I just need to decide which AD to choose for the final cut. I have spent this extra prep time by redoing my rundown sheet and collecting more to the prop list like a comb and a massive A3 sheet of my face. I have also researched more into my inspirations for this unit that involve Rupert Pupkin and the Eric Andre show. I have also spent this time helping out other groups with their projects by being on screen or being a cameraman, I've helped put 3 groups and members from all 3 groups have offered to help me so even if someone doesn't turn up for my day of shooting I will have backup helpers so I won't have trouble being short on people. Helping other groups has helped me mentally plan out how I want to execute my own show, for example I've thought more on camera placement and usage of the vision mixer, this has lead to me making the floor plan to help plan put how I want to organise the layout of the studio for day of recording. I have also got the autocue and put it on a memory stick. I have also printed everything out except for the updated rundown sheet and an extra copy of the full script as well as extra copies of the floor plan. Other than printing put those extra few documents I am fully ready for the studio day of recording. In the meantime I will be updating my website and edit the pre recorded interview and AD.
The show has been recorded and fully edited and it was a success in my opinion. Unfortunately I had less time to update my website and monthly journal as I had to spend that time preparing for the filming then followed up with the filming itself and the editing of the footage but now all I need to do is write up a reflection and put everything on my website under Unit 9 by the deadline which is in 23 hours from the time I am writing this. I am confident in my ability to complete the required tasks by the deadline.
I have now put on the website everything that I've done and documented and now all I have to complete before the deadline is the reflection and I have 21 hours to get that done so that's more than enough time to make a reflection without having to rush it.
I have fully finished the unit 9 project and have now started on the unit 11 project. I have planned for my showreel by picking out music I want to use and planning what footage I want to use for that showreel. I will play around with these picks over half term and come to a conclusion or make some showreel drafts to get a better idea of how I want to approach this showreel.
SEPTEMBER 2021
It was my first day back as a year two and it was a nice reintroduction to the course. I was tasked to pick any book of my choosing from the library and come up with a live production tv show out of it and present it to the class. I chose the book about mental disorders because this is a topic I heavily researched into back during my FMP last year so I was very familiar with the topic plus it was something I was genuinely super interested in. I came up with the idea of having every episode be based on a mental disorder and have scenes played by actors while commentary in the background educating the audience about the mental disorder being displayed on screen. The idea could've had more work but it was a good start. This exercise did help give me an idea i think would be used for my FMP for this year and it's somewhat on the topic of my FMP from last year. I want to make another short film based on another mental disorder but this time actually have the mental disorder have more focus in the narrative, the idea is to have the short film be about a character suffering from a nightmare disorder where they have nightmares everytime they sleep and they feel real. It is a real life disorder and it is just an idea that came to mind that I would love to pursue more in the future. For now I have to focus on Unit 9. For unit 5 I have come up with an idea for a type of show I want to do where I play a character who is a little on the overexagerated side and maybe include a self centred personality where he believes to be the main focus of the show despite the show being focused on mental disorders. I will have this character be interviewing people with mental disorders and set up a semi serious/comedic interview between these 2 characters. As for the live part of the show it will include the character I'm playing in the studio with maybe someone either on camera or tricaster (I havn't fully figured that one out yet) and have that camera operator be another person from level 2 media helping me out, this person won't be on camera so they won't need any scripting (unless if things change). I have looked into different types of mental disorders and heavily researched them to help me have a better understanding of how people with these mental disorders behave. I have also been looking at adaptations of books to movies and the pros and cons of it for example the written material is already there although there is a pre established audience and if you create the movie in a certain way it may disappoint fans of the book. I have visited the studio to get a peak at what tools I have to my disposal and there are many, I can control lighting with a focus light and a flood light using strength of the light itself as well as Celvin using 3500 Celvin for tungsten lighting (which is what I will likely use) and 5000 Celvin for sun lighting. The stage is built for a live show and the camera will also be used in any way I vision. This gives me alot more freedom than I had last year and has given me some ideas for how I wish to approach the unit project. I have fleshed out the script and the plot more and have a more if a understanding of how I wish to execute this. The host will be called Owen Ginnett and he will be interviewing Richard. I will be playing Owen Ginnett and I have someone who will be playing Richard as well as the cameraman. I will be using the college camera to film the interview which will take place outside of the college and as for the studio "live" recording i will be having help from a group of level 2 media students and this will help me by having helping hands and this will help them by giving them some experience with using the studio, I will show them what each of them have to do and if any problems occur I will document it and later reflect on how I could've solved that problem. As of now there is no problem and I will be focusing on the script next which has been successful so far as I have managed to achieve what my main goal for this project is for. I have managed to make it funny and entertaining with a side of education. The main target audience I am going for are anyone above the age of 12, it is directed for people mature enough to understand what is happening on the show and in the interview.
As time as progressed plans have changed and I've resorted to a plan B as I can not record my studio show during break time so I've had to record during lesson time meaning I had to get people from my class to get involved with the show. I have successfully gathered 8 other people from my class to help out with my show and I know what roles they are all going to do. In return of them helping me I will be getting involved with their shows as a cameraman/actor for 3 other groups. I have also printed off everything I've done for Atilla (using the college library printer) and put everything I've done on the cloud and my website. I am all up to date with the pre production phase and just need to move on to the Production phase, although one of my props I've ordered still needs to arrive although that will arrive before next production begins so there is no problem.
I have come up with more props to spice up the aesthetic of my set and filled in the show bulletin rundown as well as the risk assessment sheet. I will need to print off 9 copies of the rundown and studio script to give to everyone on studio day which will be 6th October. I am adding more to the props such as M&Ms with my face on them and gloves and shoes and a wet floor sign. Bizarre things to have that make the show look unprofessional which is the goal of the sets appearance. I will also be printing of 9 copies of my face that was taken a year ago, I will be plastering the set with his image using tape.
MAY 2021
Full details are in; FMP: JOURNAL - YEAR ONE
APRIL 2021
I have fully finished the script for my short film. I have also finished writing the equipment I will be using for my short film along with the budget of using those equipments. I have also started my location clearance and have covered half of the scenes for locations used and I've also started my risk assessment but havn't went fully in-depth yet, I've mainly set it up for myself later. I have filled out my contributer release forms which includes who will be in the short film and their emails so that you can contact them. I have no finished my location clearance so I now know where i will be filming all of my scene. I have also fully finished my in-depth research pack along with atleast 5 Harvard refferences. Now all I need to do for my pre-production is to complete the risk assessment then i can continue on to the next stage which is the Production itself. I have now finished my Risk assessment and put everything on my website meaning the pre-production is now complete and I have also updated my FMP Journal. Now I will move on to the Production stage. I have recorded all 6 scenes for my FMP and have included all of the clips onto my website as well as provide context to the making of those scenes.
MARCH 2021
This week I have mainly been working on my FMP Proposal and more research on my unit 6 work. I also also learnt about credit cards and loans and other things that come along with owning a credit card. It's mainly been independent learning this week and I've spent that independent learning on my unit 6 work and my FMP Proposal. So I have finished my special effects research for unit 6 and i have also finished my reflective journal for unit 6 I just have to finish creating my title sequence. As for unit 7 I have started it and finished it all within 2 days of work so now I have double checked all of my units to make sure that I'm all up to do and all I have to do is finish the last thing for my unit 6 and after that i will be fully up to date and can put my full focus on my FMP until the end of this college year. I have now finished my unit 6 Title Sequence. All of my units between 1-7 are now finally fully complete and are all on my website and up on the cloud. Now I can fully focus on my FMP which I am a little behind on so I will need to catch up on that. Right now I have almost completed my project proposal and will soon start on initial research and making my action timetable as well as sending my first draft. I have completed my initial research along with sending my first draft. Now all I have to do is to complete my timetable before Friday and when I do that I will start an early storyboard for my pre-production. So I have completed my action timetable therefore finishing my project proposal. I have also planned out my story and made a full storyboard. I am in a very good position as I have started pre-production earlier than planned therefore I am slightly ahead of schedule. I have done my pitch and I'm confident that I did well, just need to wait for my feedback next week. I have also fully complete my in-depth research pack and will need to update my proposal adding harvarrd referencing and include how long my short film will be.
FEBRUARY 2021
This week I've learnt about different types of microphones. For example there are; condenser microphones, dynamic microphones, ribbon microphones are many more. I've also learnt more about sound foley and how the sounds are created. For example the noise of stepping on snow can be created by stepping on sand. I was tasked to create sounds of my own instructed by a PowerPoint. I was tasked to record the sound of a heartbeat using a t shirt. This was a fun exercise. Today I learned a bit about alcahol and facts about it including the consequences of chronic alcahol abuse. I have started my unit 6 by doing research on special effects and have plans of making my title sequence similar to better call sauls title sequence. I have also started my FMP Proposal and have had plans of what I want to do but I still need to develop on it.
JANUARY 2021
First week back for 2021 and we're back in lockdown and it seems that every week is going to be virtual this month and most of February although it is very possible that it could be extended. This is really frustrating as personally I struggle to focus at home especially for zoom classes where we don't actually do much practical work. It's not just me that feel like this as everyone else in my class and my teachers feel the same way. This week I learned alot about film noir, i go more in-depth in the "off-topic" section of this website but I will say that I do genuinely find this interesting as the genre contains complex moral based characters and i love that! I've also worked on my unit 4 assignment by fully completing the research and started the archive documentary by looking for songs and clips online that I can use in my video. I've also had a group discussion with my class about recent events in America and how it effects the media. I've learnt alot about lighting and the different types of lighting equipment and lighting techniques. I have learnt about knife crimes, I have found out that you can go to prison for up to 4 years just for possessing a knife in public as carrying an offensive weapon is a criminal offence. Today I made sure and fully checked that all work between units 1-4 is fully finished with it all being on my website and up on the cloud. I learnt alot about different sound techniques which I will be using for my unit 5.
DECEMBER 2020
This month wont be long as we only have 2 full weeks. The first week was online and we mainly focused on our reflective journal for the news broadcast (unit 3) and any other assignments that need them. We've mainly been catching up making sure that everything is done by the end of the year. Today i have created a text poster thing that is very strange looking as i used a wide combination of solar glare, lighting, paint, gradient and other side effects. I have started my unit 4 assignment and have decided to research the Psychological-Thriller sub genre focusing on movies like Taxi Driver, Amercian Phsyco, The Shining and Joker. Today i created a story narrative video where i had to commentate over a script given to me and use videos given to me to match the script. I used my own chosen music as i didn't think any of the ones they gave me were good. I also used the sound effects they gave for me to use. I ended up finishing the video project and I'm satisfied with how it ended up as. Today i fully finished my reflection for the news broadcast (Unit 3) and i uploaded everything in the clouds (Flipbook, black and white movie, researching a hot topic, the vlog and the news broadcast and a reflection for all of these so i am fully up to date with my assignments. I have researched more into psychological thrillers (specifically the 4 movies I have decided to look into) I will be researching the minds of Travis Bickle (Taxi Driver) Arthur Flex (Joker) Patrick Bateman (American Psycho) and Jack Torrance (The Shining) and i will come to a conclusion of what these characters are suffering and i will clearly show the difference between a character with a mental illness and a character who thinks that they are going crazy.
NOVEMBER 2020
So in this unit I have been tasked to create my very own news broadcast with the group I've been placed in. First week in and I've learned a bit about how to structure a broadcast and we've started planning out how my group is gonna perform in this activity.
Today i have been introduced to a tri-caster which contains many abilities especially when it comes to streaming. I've also been working on the news unit and as a group we worked on who's doing what and i found out that I have to research about COVID panic buying and write the script for it and the interview about it by Friday.
Today I’ve learnt more interesting facts with Attila about different parts of a camera, for example an aperture is the opening of the camera that controls how much light that can effect the shot of the camera. I’ve also learnt about something for an LUT (Look up table) which is a colour scheme. For example to give a scene a warm look I make it appear orange and red and yellow or if I want it to appear cold I use blue and purple colours.
Today I've learnt what indents are and how they are used and why they are used. I've watched examples fr other news broadcasts and tv channels (E.G Channel 4)
I have become a reporter for the day, I crafted a script and memorized it for my performance as a Inteviewer. I believe I played the role effectly being both professional and slightly enthusiastic.
Today was an online day so we took this as an opportunity to create the script for the live show itself.
Today i created the script for the gaming Inteview. I have now done all of my parts and need to have the knowledge to use a Tri-caster by the day we record out news broadcast.
Today my group finally recorded the news broadcast and we all did very well with out roles. I was operating the Tri-Caster so i had to control which cameras are being shown at what times. Everyone did really well and this was a huge success in my opinion.
OCTOBER 2020
This week I have created my own character and I've developed it more and more into a real human and next week I'll be putting him into a story that fits the character. I've also watched an old black and white film called "the great train heist" which is considered to be the first film to use editing.
Today was a really interesting day as i was given the opportunity to construct and deconstruct a fully camera. As it was my first time i was struggling a lot and was really slow but I'll have time to improve in the future.
Today was an interesting day as i was tasked to make another black and white short film this time with another group. We have gone for a fight scene of having a twist where the guy who the audience thought was good was actually bad.
Today we filmed the black and white movie and i believe it was a success. We recorded the shots we needed and everything went to plan. On Friday we will edit the video together as a group and try to recreate the footage into a black and white movie Film.
Today we edited the footage together and made a black and white film thats just over 2 minute long. I belie
ve we did a great job with the editing as we tried our best to replicate black and white movies from the grain to the soundtrack.
Today was a good day for learning new useful information. First I learned about camera lenses with Attila for example the different mm lenses and what their angles are and other interesting and useful info. I then learned more about Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton and comparing both of their black and white movies but specifically the Music in them. I had to gather 5 examples, it was interesting looking back at 100 year old movies and this information will be useful for when i work on adding sound to my very own black and white movie, this was with Simon. Finally I learned alot about research methods with Nargess, I found or that there are 2 types of research, Primary and secondary, Primary research are your very own information that you found out and secondary research are information from other people. This was the most important lesson today as this is VERY important information that I'll be needing for the rest of my life.
Today i had a lesson with Nargess and we looked more into the research and how to reference. Something called Harrvard referencing and it's very important for future projects for when it comes to gaining marks and avoiding plagiarism. Another useful and important lesson.
During one of Simon's lessons I played around with Illustration for the first time. It was really overwhelming and confusing but I'll get the hang of it. I made shapes and also learned what a lower thirds is. It's when information is displayed onto the lower thirds of the screen.
Today i presented my presentation to the class. I was partnered with Adam and we had to research why Marijuana should remain illegal. Afterwards we presented in front of the class. It was like a debate. It was nerve racking performing in front of everyone but when i was in the moment it was pretty cool.
SEPTEMBER 2020
For my first 2 days back it was interesting considering the context Covid 19. The important things i learnt are where my classes are and who my teachers are. I've been toured around to some rooms and honestly I've forgotten alot of the information as it was super overwhelming. Hopefully over time I'll get used to it all.
The first week online was interesting, missed out on the first day due to me struggling to join zoom meetings but I eventually got the hang of it by Tuesday and this week I've made my own website (It needs improvements as it looks very boring) and I've started on my flipbook. I've been given the task to watch 3 videos. I'll watch them and give my thoughts on them.
The black and white video was very good as it was easy go understand. Our eyeballs see objects reflected by light upside down but my Brain processes it so that it's upright. The video with the colour ball was interesting and the colours combined made purple/pink but when you move the ball it reveals the true colours of the ball. I don't know what to say about the video of the old man and the child. It was cool seeing different methods used to show different images. Overall my black and white video was my favourite.
My first week inside college and I've learnt many things, it's mainly been setting up everything for the future but I have still learnt some interesting things, for example I've researched into the Childish Gambino song "this is America" where we looked deeper into a video. What I got out of it was that media can be used to display a message and it's really genius. I've also been creating a black and white movie with a group and we've decided to go for a horror type film. It's meant to be 30 seconds and it's been really fun brainstorming ideas for camera shots and cuts and plot. I've also been making my flip book but I'm really bad at it. I've made 2 so far but they're not good and i don't know how to properly make one, I'm tempted to great a 3rd flipbook and give it another go.
