COLLEGE WORK

UNIT 10+12

FINAL PRODUCT

REFLECTION

This project has been a very memorable experience for me as I have learnt so much from this unit that will ultimately benefit me for my FMP. Firstly as for Pre Production I believe that everything was really well planned out. We made 3 drafts for the script and had a complete shotlist along with indepth resesrch about our chosen director (David Fincher) and what his style is like and we took his style and put it in our own. We had a filming timetable and emailed multiple staff to kindly give us access to certain rooms around the campus that improves the atmosphere of our short film (e.g. theatre, dark room). The pre production was incredibly useful as it made the production process much more simpler as we had documents we could rely on to help us film exactly what we want and when we want so we had little issue when it came with when and where and most importantly what to film. Nothing went wrong with pre production and I wouldnt do anything differently. As for Production this was the most beneficial part for me as I got to learn more about how to use the camera equipment, I learned how to set everything up and put them away as well as actually using them to it's fullest potential. The actual filming process was mostly successful because we were prepared for filming because we did a good job with pre production. We filmed in V-LOG as required for the Unit so we knew exactly what settings we wanted for the camera. For the forrest scene the only problems were dog walkers and a flying plane cycling the college. For the dog walkers they weren't common enough to be a real problem but the plan was a real problem as we calculated we only had roughly 2 minutes of filming with silence before the plane makes it's way back around being loud enough to pick up on the microphone, we were able to calculate this by using an app that shows the exact location and route of these planes and that's what we used to figure that when to film. With this we were solved the plane being an issue for us. For the college lobby scene we got permission to film and was able to have the camera out of the way from everyone by having it on the second floor. Only problem was during filming students and staff would walk through the entrance at the same time as the main actor which would then cause a reshoots of the scene, as the shot wasnt very long (20 seconds) we had a very large window to film this without being interrupted especially during lesson hours. During the corridor loop scene we had to film that in late hours with permission to avoid as many students and staff as possible. People still were walking through but were kind enough to wait for us to finish our shot so we had little problem with that, we had trouble with lighting as our plan didn't work out as we were going to use the spotlight but it ended up making it so that you cannot see the main actor so we opted to use the natural lighting instead but only have the middle lights on while having darkness at the start and end. Making the visuals look a lot more cinematic. The biggest problem with this scene was acting it out as I had to memorize exactly what I did and repeat it in the exact same pace. It took multiple takes but I eventually memorized it to the point where any non synchronisation was not noticable, I used a metronome app to help me with my timing. As for the dark room the biggest problem was getting the camera around a ting gap without messing up the shot. Eventually with enough practice Mathew learned to get around it. As for the acting there was minimal trouble except when I had bash on the door as there was no lock but I had to make it look like it was so what I did was lift the door handle up and strong as I could while slamming my body on the door. The door was not damaged and neither was I and the we got the shot we were aiming for so that went well. Lighting also was not an issue with 3 LED lights on high Celvin so it gave off a white look. The theatre scene was Mathews first attempt at a dolly zoom so it took him multiple attempts to eventually learn the technique. The lighting was a spotlight to cause a silhouette out of the main actor and to achieve that wr made sure that was the only lighting. The theatre scene went extremely well with little trouble. Finally the bathroom scene, we had a sign saying we were filming (we filmed during lesson hours to minimize people walking in) and we has Jack outside to stop people from entering so that was not an issue. That would be the only issue and that was easily resolved, everything else went to plan as we got the shots we wanted. Overall production went very well and there is nothing I would do differently. This was the process I learnt the most from. As for the post production process I have the least amount of knowledge on as I did the least amount of the group on this section as most I did was help with colour correction. Mathew did the cutting and majority of Colour grading. Toby did the sound and the posters for the short film. Overall I believe this has been one of the best Units I have worked on and have learnt many skills from this unit as well as the previous units and helping other groups with their units and from those skills will help create my FMP making it into a much better final product.

College lobby opening scene

Dominic walks through the doors in a depressed manner casually heading to where they need to be. As he is walking he hears inaudible whispers for a second and is confused at first but then carries on not thinking much about it. Suddenly Dominic gets a sharp pain in his head and has a quick flashback which includes an image of a knife covered in blood in a woods area. The sharp pain stops and this startles Dominic and this begins his paranoia for the rest of the film.

Wood walking scene

We then flash back to dominic and someone walking in a forest enjoying themselves but we can tell it's not a happy thought its very de saturated gloomy dark,

Corridor loop

The paranoid protagonist makes his way to where he needs to go by walking through a corridor, after he reaches the end of the corridor to turn around the corner he sees the exact same corridor he just walked down. He walked down the corridor again and the same thing happened. He then turns around and starts backtracking to escape the loop but as he does this he then sees a silhouette in the distance. As Dominic is looking at this silhouette frozen in fear he then gets another sharp pain in his head and has another quick flashback of a dead body on the floor covered in blood. The flashback finishes and the silhouette is gone.

The dark room

Dominic is confused and anxious, he looks around his surroundings and all he sees is dark red lighting. He attempts to find an exit to the room but fails. He then starts hearing spooky distorted noises and everything slowly builds up, making Dominic panic until he gets another flashback. In the flashback he sees himself holding the blood

died knife, his hands covered in blood, he drops the knife while this person is dying on the floor in front of him. After the flashback he is back in the hallway and looks for the nearest bathroom.

Stairs penny drop

Dominic continues to backtrack trying to make himself believe that none of this is real and it will be fine if he just ignores it. During him reassuring himself while walking he then hears a penny drop from a distance (we do a dolly zoom to show the feeling of his heart dropping as he is overwhelmed with fear the point of focus is of the protagonist reaction) Dom stops walking and immediately looks behind him and we see a silhouette at the end of the corridor, his surroundings are looking dimmer and dimmer and he then gets another sharp pain quickly followed up by a flashback of someone holding the knife covered in blood. After the flashback is over Dominic is in a completely different location.

Mirror scene

EXT. Dominic swiftly enters the bathroom and quickly closes door quietly, then swiftly walks to the sink where he looks in the mirror (this is the first time we see our protagonist’s face) he is frightened, he runs a tap of water staring at his hands, the scene flashes back to a shot of his hands in the same position, with blood over them.

He is back into the woods where his friend lies in front of him dead on the floor, blood all over them both.

Dominic: I'm sorry..

The scene cuts back to him washing his hands, Dominic then splashes his face with water then looks back up at the mirror the room is noticeably empty he then look back down at the water and turns the tap off, we get a close up of dominic’s face as he looks up in fear, as he turns around the camera turns around with him, then we see the silhouette again stained with blood right next to him.

Corridor loop

INT. (Still shot of Dominic walking from the other side of the corridor with Dominic walking towards the camera, long distance) Dominic continues to walk at a quick pace.

PRIMARY RESEARCH

Subjective Ideas of Horror and Terror

I asked multiple people a single question. “What do you find scary in horror movies?” This is a very opinionated topic because everyone can find different things scary and I found that as an interesting topic to explore with people. I received the following answers;

  1.  I do find the music scary like they use certain music to make the scene scary and it just depends on what's happening.

  1. The tension of the unknown. A danger not seen is the danger most feared. Each individual viewer has their own fears and idea of what the scariest thing could be. By obscuring the danger in a horror film, you bring out the audience's imagination. I.e Blair witch project. You don't know what it looks like, you don't know where it is, you don't even know if it's real. Basically, less is more. Though the opposite is also true. Knowing how sick and twisted a character like Hannibal Lector is makes you fear them.

  1. Well personally i find jump scares cheap, and not at all scary, what i find scary in a movie is the rise in tension you get when there is something lurking in the background, but isn't shown visually, you can hear it through sound effects or maybe have music help create tension as well.

  1. I don't really watch horror movies, but what i find scary are ones like Final Destination and human centipede - things that people would never think would happen but are more realistic and much more achievable than classic horror tropes such as ghosts and possessed dolls. It’s knowing that someone could do such a sick and twisted thing like that I find scary. People initially think that a chain of events that slowly kills off a friend group by coincidence or some guy kidnapping and turning three unsuspecting strangers into a perverted creation that one first thought would never happen, however, when you think deeper into it these things it seems far more realistic and therefore more likely to happen.

  1. Personally i don't watch too much horror as i prefer action or comedy but i think for me it has to be the body horror aspect of the genre as jumpscares and tension i don't find that scary but seeing someone being brutally murdered in a horrific way is what i find grotesque and scary, examples being the saw movies as people die in such violent, disgusting ways leaving me a bit unsettled.

  1. I find suspense scary, I find scary story, I mean, if that makes sense. The story gotta have something, pretty obvious, anyways. I don't know what to say really. Jumpscare but not the scare itself. The buildup to it because the jumpscare happens. That's the end of the scare. Kind of like a climax. So yeah probably that.

In conclusion everyone has different aspects of what they find scary in horror which is great as we can incorporate all of these features into our own movie, from what i have learnt from this is that sound design is very important and the concept has to appear to be realistic to the point that it can happen in real life and to decide to either not fully show the threat until the very end or make it clear from the start what the threat is and show how twisted this threat is.

SECONDARY RESEARCH

Shepard Tone

Shepard tone is an audio illusion used to create the consistent sound of never ending rising or falling. This is created by overlapping the same notes over each over but having 1 note fade in, another note fade out and the final note having no change. This can create an uneasy feeling to anyone listening. This process was created by a man called Roger Shepard in 1964 as an acoustic version. Christopher Nolan used the Shepard tone in Dunkirk to build up tension and that is our inspiration for our very own short film. The genre of our short film is psychological thriller and our main focus for this movie is to build up tension and constantly build up that tension using techniques such as dutch tilt and dolly zoom and dark lighting but most notably the shepard tone. We will use it to create the falling effect as opposed to the rising effect and with the falling effect we will alter the sound into a more unsettling sound. Sound will be very important for us to build tension and the shepherd tone will help us achieve that.

Research Paper: Directors Style

David Fincher: Directors Research

Sound Design (Toby):

Unlike in your average film or show David Fincher creates more than just the sounds you'd expect to hear in a scene. It's not just the sound of footsteps or the ruffling of clothes, it also can be an abstract sound if the scene suits it; he especially likes to use electric droning sounds for this purpose, usually when we needs to create a sense of terror. When it is needed, he uses audio design in a more expressive way, overdoing it even, sometimes making a normal sound unrealistic but doing so to hint at or tell us something. Fincher uses sound to elevate the experience of the audience by relating the sounds to the characters on Screen. “He uses sound to creatively align with a character's experience” [1] meaning that the character's emotions and feelings can be displayed through the noise. [3]

One thing you see from Fincher is that he can use normal diegetic sound to be just as impactful as his use of abstract sounds, sometimes singling out a certain noise to increase the viewers attention to this sound, making the cause of the audio to become the focus of the scene. This is used in Fincher’s Fight Club with the sounds of each hit in certain fight scenes; this mixing in addition to the realistic punches makes for a really powerful sequence. [2]

Cinematography (Mathew):

Fincher uses cinematography to show the relationship and emotions of characters in his movies like in fight club when after tyler and the narrator finish a fight they had they share a beer together in this shot they are taking up a lot of the frame together and they are positioned in a way that makes them seem like they are friends this is how Fincher uses cinematography to show relationships between characters.

And he also uses cinematography to make scenes more impactful, in the social network during the club scene we start off with mark and Sean on a table with some girls the girls go off and its just them Sean talks to mark about the foundation of Victoria secret the brand and talks about how the founder killed himself after making bad decisions, they then go into how Facebook is a one in a million idea that he (Sean) can help with to not make the idea flop. During this whole scene the camera starts far from the characters faces, they are just talking normally but when the conversation changes about Facebook and mark the camera gets closer and closer to both mark and Sean's face to show how impactful the words Sean are saying and how much attention mark is giving since mark doesn't want to mess up

Storytelling (Daniel):

David Fincher directed a movie called Fight Club which is a novel adapted to a film released in 1999. I will look into how he uses foreshadowing and his use of montage and narration to help tell the story of fight club.

Fight Club is a story about how the main character (who i will refer to as Edward) changes from a cog in a machine working a job he doesn't like so he can buy products he doesn't need to a self fulfilling man inspiring many people to contribute towards a destructive cause against capitalism that is way bigger than him.

Edward has dissociative identity disorder which is when someone has at least two distinct and relatively enduring personality states, this disorder is accompanied by memory gaps. This description fits Edward. He is clinically depressed (insomnia, existential crisis, issues with parents, impotence) which is how it started. He then went off the deep end and developed a split personality, this is Tyler Durden.

Tyler represents everything Edward wants to be and Tyler's entire purpose is to turn Edward into Tyler. This is done through the topic of masculinity, Tyler is the redemption of masculinity repackaged as the promise of violence in the interests of social and political anarchy. This is why the fight club was created.

Throughout the film it drops multiple hints that Tyler Durden is Edward in the form of foreshadowing. Multiple moments such as the very first hint which is Tyler Durden appearing in random frames of the movie before his first official appearance. These moments occur during Edward feeling frustrated during his insomnia daze and this implies that this is why Tyler is created by Edward to help escape these frustrating moments in his life. Another hint would be during their first official interaction where Edward points out that they have the exact same briefcase, it is also foreshadowed with multiple quotes such as "Sometimes Tyler spoke for me" which refers to them being the same person and "who are you talking to" which is quoted by Marla as Tyler is talking to Edward, We the audience see the two characters but Marla does not. There are multiple more hints of the plot twist that is subtle the first time you watch but is way more noticeable on a re watch.

When re watching you start to see all of the references to the plot twist and can see other subtle details such as an early scene of the main character talking about a car accident and how the driver got his fat burned which is a deliberate reference to Tyler using human fat to make money and bombs which is Tyler's big quirk.

Throughout the whole film we get non diegetic audio of Edward's narration that only the audience and Edward can hear but if we bring it back to re watching the film you would know that Tyler is Edward therefore Tyler would be able to hear and know what the narration is too which is an interesting detail. The narration is very useful at giving context to how the main character is thinking and feeling and his motives, Because of his mental issues that we later learn about we question whether or not his narrator is entirely reliable which helps add interpretation from the audience.

One of my favourite scenes of the film is the montage during the 3rd act of the film where Edward is travelling around the country trying to find Tyler and the montage is very useful at giving the audience a lot of information during a short time which is what the main purpose of a montage should be. The audience learns that the whole concept of fight club has spread across the country and little people truly know who Tyler Durden really is, his name is treated as a legend within the community, we also learn that Edward is suffering from his insomnia and how he feels like he is experiencing deja vu with everywhere looking the same and continuously running into more fight clubs.

Fight Club is very philosophical with Tyler Durden being used to portray strong views about how to live a rebellious life. Tyler believes that instead of fearing death people should accept it and realise that living a life to receive acceptance from others is a waste of time and certainly not a life worth living. The movie portrays this message with dialogue and behaviour. Tyler's speeches about his way of his comes across as very trustworthy and reliable because of the characters confidence and street knowledge. Making Tyler into a much more stereotypical masculine man that everyone wishes to be which brings it back around to the main focus of character development of turning Edward into Tyler.

Overall I believe that fight club is a very memorable movie because of it's storytelling and use of these features that I have previously mentioned. These techniques paired with the acting makes for some incredible storytelling and helps make the movie more re watchable.
